Healing Waters In Danger of Closing

I'm writing to let everyone know that Healing Waters at 2426 NE Broadway St. is indanger of closing if they don't get enough business this month.  

There will be a silent Auction Fundraiser Benefit on Thursday, December 15th 5-8pm  and
Friday, December 16th  6-9pm 

Healing Waters has been an amazing space for me. You can go there to meditate, see talks, or just hang out.  

If you can't spend money there, head over n offer to donate time, Offer a product for the auction, or write a testimonial and I'll make sure that Joan gets it.

Don't forget to move ALL vehicles off the street the Thursday night, since the City crews may get an early start in your part of the Gulch. This includes people who have opted-out of the leaf pick up itself.

Ho, Ho, Ho. Holiday Trees to Go!

You know that holidays in The Gulch are approaching when the corner of NE 28th & Broadway magically transforms into a winter wonderland of Noble and Douglas Firs. Each December Sami Barbar, owner of Autohaus Drive, spirits away his fleet of luxury cars and supplies Holiday trees, wreaths and garlands to NE Portland families. His trees are all locally grown Made in Oregon. Sami goes up the mountain himself to personally select and tag the trees that end up on his lot. Each one as beautiful and full as the next. He had just taken delivery of 100 trees when I went by yesterday. "This will be the big weekend for trees", said Sami. He showed me a half dozen  perfect 8 foot nobles for my front room. Among them was THE one, as it always is. Sami takes great pride in this providing our family a revered holiday tradition and looks forward to the greening of his lot each year as do the many Gulchers who appreciate his efforts. Many of his customers(including me) walk over and carry home their holiday tree. Do yourself a solid and go by Sami's this weekend to stroll through the forest and say hello.

Here's a nice reminder from "Vintage Portland" that NE Portland used to be mixed use with shops and houses all the way from the river to 16th Ave. Then we tore them down to build Lloyd Center and expand "downtown".  

Dan Davis writes: "bird's-eye view of N. Broadway between N. Interstate at the bottom and N. Wheeler at the top. There was no shortage of gas stations in this area. A few of the major buildings are still standing but not a single house is left today.

Grace Holiday Art Faire and Bazaar - Sat. Dec. 10 9 am 4 pm

The Grace Holiday Art Faire and Bazaar, which is nearing its 100^th anniversary, offers you the opportunity to feel good about your holiday shopping because each gift gives three times:  once to your loved ones, twice to support important outreach projects and thrice to support local artists.

This year's lineup of local artists includes Brandon Stauffer, Colleen Cavin, Natalie Liljenwall, Phyllis Koessler, Three Sisters Candles, Jude Cornwell, Deb Galaty, Cathy Gibson, Mariann Koop-McMahon, Kristin Koop, Yetunde Laniran, Nancie Mann, Sarah Normington and Debbie McDuffee, Lori Presthus, Jan Rinehart, Alice Simpson, Judy Fleming, and Efrosinia Bell, as well as St. Mary's Guild and Women of Grace.  They will be offering glass, ceramics, jewelry, textiles, purses, cards, candles, children's items, scarves and knitwear, quilts, traditional Christmas crafts, dolls, prints, original photographs, recycled and up-cycled wearables and more.

Sponsored by the Women of Grace (or Episcopal Church Women – ECW), proceeds from the event help fund such projects as Friday Community Dinners, St. Mary's Guild quilts for children seeking shelter from domestic violence, Healing Prayer Shawls, and our Emergency Food program as well as funds for physical improvements such as new chairs or silverware.  ECW also funds Grace Art Camp scholarships each year, and some community organizations, including Mercy Corps and Episcopal Relief & Development in response to specific needs.  Half the proceeds from this year's opportunity quilt – based on Japanese design and motifs and made by St. Mary's Guild – will go help fund ongoing Tsunami cleanup efforts in Japan!

Other reasons to join us for this special event include the wildly popular holiday foods booth and our famous $8.00 gourmet luncheon and live recorder music of the season provided by Jeanne Lynch and Friends.

Here's the description for the photo: "Sullivan’s Gulch was at one time a river bed, then a route for trains, and now the I-84 freeway also follows its path. For a few years part of Lloyd Golf Course lay in it bed. Most of the course was atop the south bank of Sullivan’s Gulch (up the slope on the right) but a couple of the holes, including this green under construction, were down in the gulch itself. This view is east from about 15th."
