Sullivan's Gulch Trail Letter of Support to City Council

July 25, 2012

City of Portland
Mayor Sam Adams and City Council
1221 SW 4th Avenue, Room 340
Portland, Oregon, 97204
Attention: Mr. Chris Caruso, City Planner

Re: Sullivan's Gulch Hiking, Biking, and Walking Trail

Dear Mayor Adams and City Council,

The Sullivan's Gulch Neighborhood Association (SGNA) supports the Sullivan's Gulch Trail Project (the Trail). Preliminary planning by the City of Portland has been completed for the Trail project; and SGNA has participated in the N/NE Quadrant Planning process and various other planning efforts related to new investment around our neighborhood. We would like to follow this planning with implementation efforts that will keep the Trail project moving forward.

To this end we recommend that the portion of the Trail within the N/NE Quadrant Plan boundaries be included along with any infrastructure projects proposed including improvements at I-5 and Broadway/Weidler, secondary and tertiary corridor improvements within the Lloyd District area, and any other infrastructure improvement planning and funding available for the implementation of the N/NE Quadrant Plan.

Further, we encourage the City of Portland to allocate funding for staff to pursue public and public/private partnerships. Adjacent to the Lloyd District and Sullivan's Gulch, areas of significant private and public investment, the Sullivan's Gulch Trail provides an opportunity to complete an ideal multi-modal network of transit options necessary to support and sustain regional economic growth. Therefore we believe this project is a priority for inner North and Northeast Portland and encourage funding be identified and secured as soon as possible.

We welcome the opportunity to work with the City of Portland and others to plan and finance this project.

Sincerely,
Sullivan's Gulch Neighborhood Association
Land Use and Transportation Committee

Carol Gossett, Chairperson

Deadline for Garage Sale Registration Extended

Saturday July 21 is going to be a BUSY day in the neighborhood!  The NE Broadway merchants are holding their annual Summer Sale that weekend so there are sure to be many people in the area, who will see our Garage Sale signs ready to buy.

But only if you have a sale.  And preferably one participating the Gulch-wide garage sale event.

You host the sale at your own house (or team up with a neighbor). We provide buyers with a list of garage sale sites and a map with locations highlighted. You keep the proceeds of your sale! (Maps with lists of garage sale sites will be available for download on the SGNA web page www.sullivansgulch.net.)

To get maximum participation, Lifestyles Committee Chair Stephen Chase has extended the deadline to register your sale by 6 pm on Thursday, July 19. Download the application form here, fill it out and drop it off, along with your $10 registration fee, at the home of Stephen's house, 2534 NE Clackamas Street before 6 pm this Thursday.   For info phone: 971-227-2800.   (Since there are 2 application forms on the page, why not give one to your neighbor?)

Thanks for your participation and support.

Start Seeing Broadway - on our Walkabout

Walk with neighbors and friends along Broadway to discuss buildings, businesses and possibilities for the future of our neighborhood and our favorite business district. After the walk, meet to share ideas, look at area maps and consider a vision for a stronger, more vibrant neighborhood.  An architect will join each walking group to add to the discussion and sketch ideas and help formulate group ideas and recommendations.

The Walkabout is a walking charrette to help neighbors get a better perspective on the current state of the neighborhood and think in detail about where we'd like to see things heading.

The Walkabout will be held from 9 AM to Noon on Saturday, July 21.  At 9 am, meet at one of two places:
 • 33rd and Broadway (bus stop on the south side of Broadway)
 • 15th and Broadway (outside the Starbucks)

Please join us on Saturday, July 21.  If you have questions, leave a comment below and we'll get in touch with you.

Guest Speaker at July 10 SGNA Board Meeting - starts 7 pm sharp

The SGNA Board is trying something new — we are inviting guest speakers to our Board meeting to give everyone an opportunity to learn more about what's going on in our area.  And we've got a new meeting time 7 PM (instead of 7:30).

Many SGNA neighbors have heard about the N/NE Quadrant Planning Project, while others have actively participated in the planning process.  The planning process has been focused on three main subject areas:  infrastructure, land use, and design policy for the future.

Our guest speaker for July is Andrew Johnson, with ODOT.  He'll be talking about the overall project and a "lid" concept I-5/Broadway/Weidler interchange.

The N/NE Quadrant project, part of the Central City Planning effort, is being coordinated jointly by the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (PPS) and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).

Please join us at 7:00 PM (note new meeting time) on July 10th at Holladay Park Plaza to learn more about the N/NE Quadrant Plan.  Sign in at the front desk and you will be pointed to the meeting room.
